Stephen has over 40 years of varied experiences within the industry that can be summarized as 23 years as a practicing Architect; 16 years in Commercial Real Estate Property Development; and 7 years in Commercial Property Management; including projects totaling more than 10 million s.f. for major pension funds, public entities and private clients.
Stephen served in many roles over 8-years for the CA. Commission for Disability Access, ultimately being appointed in 2013 by then Governor Jerry Brown to serve as Commissioner and ultimately Vice-Chair. During his tenure as Chair of the Checklist Committee, he led the charge to create the first state-wide Accessibility Checklist. He also served for 6-years on the CA. Building Standards Commission on the Accessibility Advisory Committee guiding towards re-formatting the '13 CBC to align with the ADA referencing system. Undoubtedly, Stephen's background being raised with a disabled sister provided his foundation for this expertise. Stephen holds three certifications: CASp; ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner; and ACIA Registered Construction Inspector Division III. He is an active founding member of CASI after serving 5-years on the Board of Directors and remains a subject-matter expert for the CA Division of State Architect for the CASp Exam preparation process. Stephen has developed a Windows-based assessment tool to inventory the firm's various large-scale assessments.
Since becoming a registered Architect in 1982, Stephen has been an active member of AIA. The firm has served as the Accessibility AJHJ-Consultant for two major Design-Build State Prisons; and completed numerous Site, Building, and Tenant Improvement projects over the years. Stephen's firm is active as an accessibility peer reviewer for many projects by national architectural firms, including a San Francisco 44-story high rise.
After earning an M.B.A. in finance from U.C. Berkeley, Stephen played a role in the development of nearly 4-dozen shopping centers in seven states. He has an active Real Estate Broker's license and earned a Certified Shopping Center Manager designation from the International Council of Shopping Centers.
